'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a party burying cables in a forward area. He showed splendid powers of organization and courage in leading his men to their work under heavy shell fire, and encouraging them at their task in the face of great difficulties. It was largely due to his efforts that the work was completed.'
