Military Medal 'On the morning of 31st August 1918, near CLERY, the 25th Battery was heavily shelled by a 5.9" Howitzer whilst firing a barrage. Although in the centre of the shelled area, Sergeant CHEGWYN kept his gun in action until a shell exploding at the gun, killed two of his detachment and wounded a third. This Non Commissioned Officer continued his task until another shell passing through the Ammunition Wagon close by, put his gun out of action. He then obtained stretchers and gave valuable assistance in removing the wounded men out of danger. His splendid coolness was a fine example to all around him.'
