War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 18 September 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 15 November 1916, and taken on strength, Pioneer Training Bn. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 February 1917; taken on strength, 3rd Pioneer Bn, in the field, 16 March 1917. On leave to the United Kingdom, 21 March 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 8 April 1918. Wounded in action, 26 May 1918 (gassed), and admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 41st Stationary Hospital, 27 May 1918 (gas shell); to England, 27 June 1918, and admitted to 1st Eastern General Hospital, 28 June 1918 (gassed and burns); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 3 September 1918; discharged on furlough, 6 September 1918, to report to No 4 Command Depot, 20 September 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 30 October 1918; rejoined Bn, in the field, 3 November 1918. Marched out to England for return to Australia, 10 April 1919; marched into No 3 Group, 15 April 1919.
