War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Melbourne on HMAT 'Orrieto', 21 October 1914. Embarked Alexandria on 'Novian' and proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 5 April 1915; promoted to rank of Corporal, Gallipoli, 9 May 1915. Admitted to 2nd Field Ambulance, Gallipoli, 19 June 1915 (febrile); transferred to Casualty Clearing Station, 20 June 1915; rejoined unit, 24 June 1915. Disembarked Lemnos with Quartermaster Staff, 15 December 1915; rank reverted to Private at own request, 22 December 1915. Disembarked Alexandria from HMT 'Empress of Britain', 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 1 February 1916, of breaking camp, 18 January 1916: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2. Taken on strength of 2nd Machine Gun Company, Serapeum, 13 March 1916.
