'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations at PERONNE on 1st and 2nd September 1918. This man showed remarkable courage and coolness under the most trying circumstances. An attacking party were held up by heavy enemy Machine Gun fire, and this man with a Lewis Gun went forward with all disregard for his own personal safety and got his gun into a position where he could obtain effective fire and succeeded in silencing an enemy Machine Gun and allow the advance to continue. he remained in front until ordered to return by his Company Commander. His coolness and daring throughout are worthy of the highest praise.'
