Medals |
Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at LE PEUPLIER near CAESTRE on the night of 28th/29th April, 1918. The enemy opened a heavy shell fire on the 102nd Battery Wagon Lines. These N.C.O.s. and men [CHUDLEIGH, 206 J. BENNETT, 4028 J. LEWIN] showed great courage and devotion to duty in rescuing two men from under a tree, which had fallen on four men, killing two. The further shelling set fire to a dump of ammunition, which spread to the stables. They then turned their attention to the extinguishing of the fire, and afterwards to the release and withdrawal of the horses and other Government property. They showed great courage and determination throughout, and were conspicuous among a gallant party of 12 organised by Captain DOHERTY.'
