Was unable to march on account of pain in lower part of chest ... Aged 43½. Looks older and debilitated, and is unfir for general service.'

Commenced return to Australia from Portland on board HT 'Ajana', 17 October 1916, for discharge (debility); disembarked Adelaide, 5 December 1916; discharged (medically unfit), Adelaide, 31 March 1917.
