Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 5 April 1915. Admitted to No 2 Stationary Hospital, 9 May 1915 (septic wound, right shoulder); transfererd to Convalescent Hospital, Helouan, 15 June 1915; to Base Details, Zeitoun, 17 June 1916; rejoined Bn at Gallipoli, 9 July 1916.

Wounded in action, 6-9 August 1915 (gun shot wound, back: serious); transferred by HMS 'Dunluce Castle' to St George Hospital, Malta, 12 August 1915; to England, 26 August 1915, and admitted to King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, SE, 3 September 1915. Commenced return to Egypt with 15th Draft, 29 December 1915; rejoined unit, Tel el Kebir, 15 January 1916.

Transferred to 56th Bn, 16 February 1916.

Appointed Temporary Sergeant, 18 February 1916; promoted Sergeant, Ferry Post, 18 February 1916. Taken on strength, 5th Divisional Ammunition Column, as Sergeant, 4 May 1916, and posted to No 3 Section, 15 May 1916.
