'At HOOGE, FRANCE 0n 20th September, 1917 during the operations in GLENCORSE and POLYGONVELDE WOODS, Pte. CLARK, after his section commander was killed, took charge and led his men into action, showing splendid skill, pluck and determination. After the objective was captured he established an outpost where he resisted an enemy counter-attack. He remained at this post until he was relieved.'
