Proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli), 5 April 1915. Sentenced to 14 days' detention for refusing to obey the orders of his superior officer: sent to Alexandria, 10 July 1915. Returned from detention, 22 July 1915. Transferred to ANZAC Corps Headquarters, 2 November 1915.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 13 June 1916.

Marched out to ANZAC Entertainment Bn, 14 April 1917; to 2nd Divisional Train, 22 August 1917. Found guilty of neglecting to obey Company orders and having incomplete equipment, 5 September 1917: awarded 2 days' Field Punishment No. 2.

On leave to Paris from Belgium, 15 February 1918; rejoined unit, 21 February 1918. Found guilty of being absent without leave for 2 days: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 2 days' pay.

Admitted to hospital, 26 April 1918; transferred to England, 1 May 1918 (inflamed groin), and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Edgbaston, Birmingham, 2 May 1918 (abcess, groin). Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 29 May 1918; to No. 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 31 May 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Borda' (submarine duty), 20 October 1918; disembarked Adelaide, 15 December 1918; discharged, 16 February 1918.
