War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 22 August 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 13 October 1916. Married Florence May ABRAHAM, spinster, aged 30, Parish Church, Roydon, Essex, 23 October 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 13 December 1916; joined 2nd Bn, in the field, 18 December 1916. Admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance, 25 May 1917 (myalgia) ; transferred to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, 1 June 1917 (trench feet); to No 6 General Hospital, Rouen, 5 June 1917 (cardiac: valvular disorder of the heart); to No 2 Convalescent Depot, Rouen, 21 June 1917; discharged to Base Depot, Havre, 23 July 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 26 November 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 4 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 22 February 1918. Found guilty, 21 July 1918, of being absent without leave, 10 am to 8.15 pm, 20 July 1918: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 1 day's pay under Royal Warrant.
