'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations against enemy positions south of the SOMME east of HAMEL, on 8th August, 1918. Alone Private CLARKE rushed a post in ACCROCHE WOOD, killed two of the enemy and captured 3 prisoners. On reaching LONG VALLEY he assisted in the capture of three Field Guns and 20 prisoners. On another occasion he rushed a post single handed and brought back 3 prisoners. Throughout the operation he distinguished himself by his great daring and determination.'
