'On the 8th June, 1917, during operations south of MESSINES for his bravery and magnificent work when bringing in wounded from forward positions in the vicinity of the GREEN LINE. With the aid of a member of another Battalion he proceeded with a stretcher to bring in a wounded man from a shell hole in a very exposed position. His comrade was killed. A second man came forward to assist but was wounded by a sniper. A third man came forward and by crawling on their hands and knees and dragging the stretcher they succeeded in bringing their wounded comrade to a place of safety. Private CLAYTON again went forward and assisted to bring in a man who had advanced with him in his second attempt. This man has previously been mentioned in orders for excellent reconnaissance work performed by him in No Man's Land.'
