Military Medal 'At POZIERES, FRANCE, on the night of 16/17th. August 1916, Sgt. CLIFTON was in charge of 16 bearers of the 1st Field Ambulance with the knowledge that many of his bearers were in a very exposed position on our right flank and that four of them had been killed and four wounded. Nothwithstanding the heavy and continuous shell fire of the enemy he organised further stretcher squads to bring these wounded in and also attended other wounded lying in this area. Sgt. CLIFTON made repeated journeys on this occasion in the open through an extremely heavy barrage by the enemy fire. By his courageous example and organising ability, Sgt. CLIFTON was a strong factor in the satisfactory evacuation of the wounded in this action.'
