Served in Egypt and at Gallipoli. Suffered concussion from constant shelling, August 1915, and was evacuated to Cairo, then to Fremantle. Discharged as medically unfit, 24 October 1916. After his brother Harry was killed in September 1916, he re-enlisted, and served in France until being wounded, 1 July 1918. He was again discharged in Perth as medically unfit. His diary was presented to the Australian War Memorial in September 1992.
