Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On one occasion during our advance he attacked a machine gun post single handed, killing three of the garrison and capturing the gun, which he immediately turned on the enemy with great effect, thus facilitating our further progress. When his officer and platoon sergeant had become casualties he took command, and displayed qualities of leadership and initiative of a very high order. His behaviour throughout was most gallant.'
