Embarked Sydney, 8 August 1817; disembarked Liverpool, England, 24 October 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 14 November 1917; taken on strength, 3rd Tunnelling Company, 16 January 1918. Found guilty, 27 March 1918, of failing to report at 8.30 am for fatigue duty after being previously warned: forfeited 2 days' pay.

Wounded in action, 8 April 1918 (shell gas), and admitted to 1/2 North Midland Field Ambulance; transferred by Ambulance Train No 42 to 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital, Outrean, 10 April 1918; to 25th General Hospital, 13 April 1918; to 10th Convalescent Depot, Escault, 21 April 1918; rejoined unit, 29 May 1918. On leave, 2 November 1918; rejoined unit, 25 November 1918. On leave ('from France': to England?), 8-22 April 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'City of Exeter', 12 July 1919; disembarked Fremantle, 17 August 1919; discharged, Perth, 16 September 1919.
