'During the advance near ZONNEBEKE on 26th September, 1917, this N.C.O. was detailed to dig a strong point forward of the front line. He and his party advanced with the first wave of the attacking Infantry, and when in the required position he sited the strong point, and took charge after two Officers had become casualties. vt was due to his courage and determination under the fire of machine guns and snipers that the work was satisfactorily completed. He also assisted in bringing in exposed wounded to the advanced dressing station at a moment when there was a scarcity of stretcher bearers.'
