Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 23rd day of August, 1918, at HERLEVILLE WOOD. During the attack this Stretcher Bearer carried out his duties nobly and well. Under heavy Machine Gun and rifle fire and through heavily wooded country, with enemy snipers, he worked continuously. On one occasion when he noticed one of our wounded lying a few yards from an enemy post, despite hostile fire he walked forward and succeeded in bringing the wounded man safely to our lines. He showed great courage and coolness under most trying circumstances.'
