'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In spite of heavy casualties amongst officers and men he fought his battery with the greatest gallantry and determination during protracted operations, although subjected to continual and intense bombardment, working day and night without any regard for himself. He inspired all ranks by his example of self-sacrifice and fine leadership.'
