Distinguished Conduct Medal

'During operations between 21 March and 9 September 1918, he has shown conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as battalion signal sergeant. He was in charge of all forward communications at Hamel, and maintained it under heavy shell fire. In the attack near Mercourt on 8 August, he went over with an attacking company, and as soon as the objective was reached, in spite of heavy rifle and machine gun fire, he promptly ran a line back to brigade headquarters and maintained it throughout. His work has been of the best.'
