Distinguished Conduct Medal 'for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his battery was out of action, this N.C.O. attached himself to a battery of Colonial field artillery, along with several others of his battery salvaging some Lewis guns, and posting themselves on the flank. By their fire, they enabled the guns to be kept in action much longer than would otherwise have been possible. When it was decided to withdraw he went and collected about fifty stragglers, and got one gun on the road. Throughout the whole of a trying day he set a splendid example, and was continually rallying stragglers and checking the advance.'
