Embarked Sydney on 'Hororata', 2 May 1916. Embarked Christchurch and proceeded overseas to France, 6 August 1916; marched into 1st Australian Divisin Base Depot, Etaples, 8 August 1916; taken on strength, 8th Field Company Engineers, 22 August 1918.

Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, 20 December 1916, and transferred to Casualty Clearing Station (influenza); to Ambulance Train, 21 December 1916, to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 22 December 1916. Embarked Rouen on HS 'St. George' and proceeded to England, 23 December 1916; admitted to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, 24 December 1916; discharged on furlough, 2 April 1917 to 17 April 1917.

Found guilty, 3 May 1917, of (1) being absent without leave, 3.30 pm 17 April, to 30 April 1917, (2) losing by neglect a government document which was his duty to protect: awarded 12 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 28 days' pay. Transferred to 17th Field Company Engineers and taken on strength, Parkhouse, 17 May 1917.

Embarked Southampton and proceeded overseas to France, 17 November 1917; marched into Australian General Base Depot, Rouelles, 18 November 1918.

Admitted to 39th General Hospital, Havre, 27 November 1917 (not yet determined); discharged to Australian General Base Depot, Rouelles, 5 January 1918. Admitted to 2nd General Hospital, Havre, 26 January 1918 (bronchitis). Embarked Havre on HT 'Warilda' and proceeded to England, 1 February 1918; admitted to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, 2 February 1918; transferred to No 1 Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 11 February 1918; discharged on furlough, 21 February 1918 to 7 March 1918. Marched into No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 9 March 1918.

Found guilty, 9 March 1918, of being absent without leave, 11.00 am, 7 March, to 7.15 am, 9 March 1918: forfeited total of 8 days' pay.
