'Acted as Company messenger during operations north west of POZIERES from 5th August, 1916, until 11th August, 1916, and showed wonderful dash and courage throughout. After being wounded he still carried on his duties; on two occasions he went out from an exposed flank under enemy machine gun fire and collected men who had lost touch and continued to carry on until ordered from the field by his Company Commander to have his wounds dressed.'
