Proceeded overseas to France, 20 December 1916; taken on strength, 34th Bn, 18 January 1917.

Found guilty, 24 June 1917, of committing an act prejudicial to good order and military discipline: awarded 6 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeiture of 14 days' pay.

Admitted to 11th Field Ambulance, 12 October 1917 (shaken by shell); admitted to 10th Casualty Clearing Station, 15 October 1917 (influenza); transferred to 7th Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 17 October 1917; transferred to 6th Convalescent Depot, 20 October 1917; transferred to 5th Convalescent Depot, 22 October 1917; transferred to Base Details, 14 November 1917. Rejoined 34th Bn in the field, 9 December 1917. On leave to England, 13 February-3 March 1918.

Accidentally wounded (pick wound, head), 17 April 1918; transferred to England, 20 April 1918, and admitted to Voluntary Aid Hospital, Cheltenham, 22 April 1918. Discharged from hospital and granted furlough, 24 May-7 June 1918 to report to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, 16 June 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 29 August 1918; rejoined 34th Bn in the field, 5 September 1918.

Detached to Base Depot to undertake Non Military Employment in England, 4 March 1919. Undertook NME, 20 March-20 June 1919: farm experience with William Sharrott, Knightley, Staffordshire. Reported from period of NME, 23 June 1919, and granted further leave until 7 July 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Ulysses', 22 July 1919; disembarked Sydney, 5 September 1919.
