'At WESTHOEK RIDGE, 20th September 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the officer had been wounded, he took charge of the platoon and rendered valuable assistance in consolidating the position on the left flank of the Company. Later, as Acting C.S.M. when the Company Commander had been wounded he did excellent work in company with the only remaining company officer, in carrying out the relief of the Company under heavy shell fire. Throughout the whole attack he set a fine example to all ranks and was continually moving amongst the men and inspiring a high standard of courage and duty.'
