'On the 12th August, 1918, near PROYART, during operations on the SOMME, this N.C.O.s Company went forward to establish an outpost line during which the enemy put down a heavy barrage of H.E. and gas. On his Platoon Officer becoming a casualty Corporal COPE too command and led his Platoon through the barrage and established the outpost line in spite of heavy enemy opposition and casualties.'
