'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of 13 September, 1918, south of Le Verguier, in charge of four squads of bearers. When the enemy attacked our outpost line, he steadied his men and brought about an orderly retirement. He and three other men remained behind under heavy machine gun and shell fire, and carried a stretcher case over 2,000 yards under heavy shell fire.'
