Military Medal 'Whilst the 54th Battalion was acting as Reserve Battalion for 14th Australian Brigade from 28-9-17 to 28-9-17, 2 and half Companies were located on the Eastern edge of NONNEBOSCHEN. On the 26th September 1917 (the day of the attack on POLYGON WOOD) the area occupied by this force was very heavily shelled resulting in 18 other ranks being killed and 65 other ranks wounded (almost 50% of the casualties). During this trying period Private CORNISH volunteered to act as Stretcher Bearer. he dressed wounded and made no less than nine trips along a heavily shelled track (the GLENCOURSE WOOD track) to the R.A.P. in GLENCOURSE WOOD and the A.D.S. at CLAPHAM JUNCTION. His gallantry and devotion to duty set a splendid example to his comrades under the most trying circumstances.'
