War service: Egypt

Medical report reads, 'Was taken ill with pains in knees and lips and finally shoulder joints (whilst on route to Egypt during August). Feet: No swellings. Pains were worse at night and prevented sleep. Joints became gradually stiff and finally became crippled with bent back and unable to walk without a stick. Has been in No 3 Auxiliary Hospital for a month and in Helouan Convalescent Depot nine weeks. Is getting worse', Helouan, 5 January 1916.

Embarked Suez on HS 'Karoola' and commenced return to Australia, 20 January 1916; disembarked Melbourne, 21 February 1916. Discharged as being medically unfit for continued service, Adelaide, 12 June 1916.
