'At PERONNE during operations on 1st/2nd September 1918, for conspicuous courage and initiative. He took up a position at a street corner with a Lewis gun and silenced 2 enemy machine guns which were holding up an advance, besides cutting off the enemy retreat and enabling a large number of prisoners to be taken.'
