Military Medal 'At WESTHOEK RIDGE 20th September 1917. For conspicuous gallantry when he, accompanied by Private BASSINGTHWAIGHTE observed an enemy machine gun firing from a concrete position and inflicting casualties on our advancing wave. He rushed forward engaging the enemy gun with his Lewis Gun firing from the hip. He thus enabled his companion to advanced and bomb the crew whom they killed or captured. Later he took up an advanced position with his gun and maintained it despite heavy shell fire for about thirty hours. Throughout, he was a splendid example to the rest of his section.'
