War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Wounded in action, Gallipoli, 25 April 1915 Wounded in action, 25 July 1916 (gun shot wound, left hand). Declared illegal absentee, 8 January 1917. Injured on train when guard closed the door on his fingers, 27 April 1917; 4crushed fingers, left hand, amputated. Tried by District Court Martial, 28 July 1917. Found Guilty of Absent without Leave, 1 December 1916-4 May 1917. Sentenced to nine months' detention. Unexpired portion of sentence (188 days) remitted as from 21 October 1917. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Runic', 20 December 1917; discharged (medically unfit), Perth, 27 February 1918.
