'During the operations carried out by the Battalion from 29th September to 1st October near BELLICOURT Private CRACKEL showed the greatest courage and devotion to duty. When the No. 1 of his Lewis Gun team was killed by an enemy bullet Private CRACKEL immediately operated the gun. At the moment a large body of hostile troops were advancing within 50 yards and he was being sniped at from the flanks.
