'During the attack on ST. MARTIN'S WOOD near CHUIGNES on 23rd August, 1918, when the Infantry were held up by heavy Machine Gun and rifle fire Private CRAWFORD brought his gun into action giving the Infantry covering fire and enabling them to advance and captured the Wood. Subsequently he made several journeys to the Section S.A.A. dump for ammunition through a heavy barrage. Later, a gas shell bursting close to the gun and rendering the remainder of the team casualties, he carried on firing alone until the arrival of reinforcements.'
