'He led his platoon in the attack on Mont St. Quentin near Peronne, on the 31st August 1918, with conspicuous gallantry. On reaching the final objective he went round the flank of the village, and held a position in front until a strong enemy counter attack drove him back to a position on the left flank, which was in the air, and which he held all day against many attacks. He set a fine example of cool daring.'
