Military Medal 'In the attack on PERONNE on 1st September 1918, this N.C.O. displayed great resourcefulness and initiative in the management and control of his Company Lewis Gun teams. Early in the operation he received injuries to his side as a result of shell concussion, but refused to leave the line although advised to do so by his Company Commander. He kept in touch with his Lewis Gun teams right throughout and did consistent good work in reorganising teams that had suffered casualties. On one occasion he recovered a Lewis Gun, organised a scratch team, and personally engaged, and silenced a Machine Gun position that was inflicting heavy casualties on his Company. By his daring, resource and courage he set a fine example to all ranks and was of the utmost assistance to his company Commander.'
