War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 23 December 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 17 February 1917, and admitted to Devonport Military Hospital (sick, slight: mumps); discharged to Training Depot, Perham Downs, 21 February 1917. Passed test and qualified as cold shoer at the School of Farriery, Romsey, 13 July 1917. Reverted to Gunner at own request, 11 October 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 1 March 1918; taken on strength, 4th Divisional Ammunition Column, 7 March 1918. Transferred to 11th Field Artillery Brigade, 14 March 1918, and posted to 41st Battery. Promoted Temporary Bombardier, 23 September 1918; Bombardier, 23 December 1918. Detached to Australian Corps Educational School, 6 January 1919. Marched out to England, 13 May 1919; marched in to No 3 Group, 14 May 1919.
