Embarked Sydney, 11 November 1916; found guilty, at sea, of breaking guard, 19 December 1916: awarded 14 days' extra fatigue; admitted to ship's hospital, 29 December 1916; discharged from hospital, 29 January 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 32 days; disembarked Devonport, England, 30 January 1917. Marched in to 14th Training Bn, Hurdcott, 1 February 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 3 May 1917; taken on strength, 53rd Bn, 7 May 1917.

Found guilty, 30 June 1917, of being absent without leave from 1600, 19 June 1917, until arrested in billets at 2100, 28 June 1917: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 10 days' pay. Marched in to 1st Anzac Field Punishment Compound, 1 July 1917; rejoined unit, 22 July 1917.

Detached to Daily Tactical Working Party, 16 September 1917; rejoined Bn, 22 September 1917.

Detached for duty to 1st Tunnelling Company, 29 January 1918; rejoined Bn, 21 February 1918.

On leave to United Kingdom, 22 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 12 March 1918. Found guilty while on leave, of being drunk in Grafton Street, Dublin, 27 February 1918: awarded forfeiture of 5 days' pay.
