'For gallantry in action and devotion to duty. His work has been at all times characterized by an utter disregard of danger, and devotion to duty. On the 21st September, 1918, near BELLICOURT, when acting as Company Intelligence N.C.O., his work was of special value. On that occasion, although twice buried by 5.9 shells, he stuck to his work of observing the village of BELLICOURT until ordered to the rear, thereby gaining valuable information of and guarding against enemy concentration.'
