On Application to Enlist Form, 5 January 1916, he stated that both parents were dead; gave sister, Mrs M. Cusack, PO, Grenfell, as next of kin; and stated age to be 21.2 years. On 28 (January 1916), his mother, Mrs Johanna Crowe, wrote to the Chief Instructor, No. 3 Signalling School, Casula: 'I am the Mother of Private H.J. Crow, and I am applying to you for his discharge as he is too young & I do not think he is very strong. My son was 16 years on 1st Nov, 1915. He joined the Carmichael Show without my knowledge. He is altogether too young, so I hope you will get him his discharge. He was discharged 15 April 1916: length of time in camp, 99 days.

Embarked from Sydney, 24 January 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 27 March 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 23 August 1917; taken on strength, 33rd Bn, 1 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 2 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, legs, face and arms); admitted to 142nd Field Ambulance, 2 October 1917; to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 2 October 1917; to England, 16 October 1917, and admitted to Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham. Discharged from hospital, 24 November 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on Hospital Ship No. 1 'Karoola', for discharge (compound fracture, left tibia), 25 November 1917. Disembarked Melbourne, 10 January 1918, for overland travel to Sydney; discharged, medical unfitness, 17 April 1918.
