'During the operations east of YPRES on 20th September, 1917, Lance Corporal CUBBINS who in company with Pte. PINKERTON laid the lines to the Company's and established touch with them shortly afterwards. At intervals during the day and night he moved out to repair the lines which were continually being broken by shell fire. On the night of the 20th instant the lines had become so damaged that it was decided to lay a heavy armoured cable out to the Companies and Cpl. CUBBINS in company with two others moved out to do the work. In spite of the extreme weight of the cable, the darkness of the night and the pitted country the line was successfully laid. During the barrage of the following morning and evening the lines became broken again through direct hits and again L/Cpl. CUBBINS went out and repaired them.'
