War service: England Embarked Brisbane, 8 August 1916. Failed to re-embark Capetown, South Africa, 20 September 1916; found guilty, 21 September 1916, of being in South Africa when it was his duty to be elsewhere, breaking quarantine regulations, drunk: awarded 168 hours' detention, and forfeited 7 days' pay. Re-embarked on board 'Itrea', Capetown, 25 September 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 30 October 1916, and marched in to No 3 Camp, Australian Details, Parkhouse, same day. Discharged in the United Kingdom, 30 August 1917, and rated as permanently unfit for war service either at home or abroad. Medical certificate stated that he was suffering 'from the effects of a fall on a rock while in trenches [which] makes it difficult for him to rise after sitting down, some stiffness in muscles of back.'
