Embarked Sydney, 22 May 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 18 July 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 29 August 1916; taken on strength, 1st Australian Tunnelling Company, 30 September 1916.

Wounded in action, 21 September 1917 (shell wound, finger and hand), and admitted to 6th Field Ambulance; transferred to 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 21 September 1917; rejoined unit, 24 September 1917.

On leave, 14 March 1918; rejoined unit, 14 April 1918.

On leave, 28 November 1918; rejoined unit, 19 December 1918. Married Clara Henrietta BULLEN, The Lady of Our Compassion Catholic Church, West Ham, London, 8 December 1918.

Marched out to England for return to Australia, 3 April 1919. Admitted to 1st Australian Stationary Hospital, Sutton Veny, 12 April 1919 (bronchitis); discharged to Training Depot, 13 April 1919. Granted indefinite leave, 18 August 1919.
