'For most conspicuous gallantry and initiative in the attack near BEAUREVOIR, east of PERONNE, on 4th October, 1918. In the preliminary stages of the advance the platoon sustained heavy casualties, and was unable to reach its final objective. This N.C.O. there upon rallied his men and pushed forward in front to reconnoitre. He returned signalling to them to "come on" and charged at their head, using his rifle with telling effect on the retreating enemy. At the head of mopping-up detachments he cleared up the whole situation, killing and capturing a number of the enemy. Whilst consolidation was in progress, Sergeant ARMSDEN walked up and down over exposed ground encouraging the men, and energetically working himself. This N.C.O. during the first stage of the attack saved what might have become a critical situation on the flank.'
