Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Missing in action, reported wounded, 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 29 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'killed in action, 19 July 1916'. File has notation: 'Presumed to be buried in No Man's Land approx at 5J90 43 to 5K 0 2 5 1 Sheet Hazebrouck 5A'. Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Mother wrote to Base Records, 7 September 1921: ' ... he was in the Big Battle on Somme on the 19 of July 1916 wounded and they were not to take any of the [?] in from the field for 48 hours as the Germans Batted [bayonetted?] him and berried him alive, were he fell this is the story I got from the field from a mate of his the name was Fellows. I burnt the letter about a week before I got yours excuse me.' |
