'For most conspicuous gallantry, endurance and devotion to duty in remaining at duty with his gun after being wounded 3 times during the assault on the HINDENBURG Line on 3rd May, 1917. On being ordered back he assisted another wounded man through a heavy barrage to the Aid Post, a journey of well over half an hour.'
