Proceeded overseas to France, 4 February 1917; joined 20th Bn in the field, 9 February 1917.

Wounded in action, 2 May 1917 (gun shot wound, left arm and hand); admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France, 4 May 1917. Transferred to England on board HS 'Aberdonia', 14 May 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 15 May 1917. Granted furlough, 3-17 August 1917, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth.

Commenced return to Australia, 27 September 1917; discharged, 19 February 1918.
