'In the operation on the night 10th/11th August, 1918, near PROYART, this N.C.O. was in charge of a Section in rear of the tanks. When the tanks were held up by fire from the enemy, he led his section into the open on the left of the tank and immediately directed Lewis gun fire on a machine gun position of the enemy. After a line had been taken up and was being consolidated, he proceeded to the rear and obtained a stretcher party taking it forward in front of the forward line. One of the bearers was wounded and Lance Corporal DAVIS assisted with the stretcher making three trips. He was present under the most intense machine gun fire and was one of the last to withdraw, having rendered great assistance to Lieutenant ASHMEAD. He was instructed to cover the evacuation of the wounded with Lewis gun fire and did this to the best of his ability taking post with a team well ahead of the wounded well out from the line. He displayed leadership intrepid bravery and devotion to duty.'
