'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when his battalion was ordered to fill a gap caused by an enemy counter attack. The position was very obscure but he reconnoitred it through an intense barrage, and guided his company to the position. By his energy and fearlessness he set a magnificent example to the battalion at a very critical moment.'
